Years
Photo album on the counter
Pictures in black and white and color
Frozen smiles, windswept hair, and winters
With you, I've spent countless hours

The first one was withered, the lines all faded
You and me smiling, sitting on a tree
The year I realized kindness wasn't overrated
That was the year we met, the first time I felt free

A photo taken when I was five and you eight
Christmas a month after you stopped the big boys
From picking on me, made sure I wasn't home late
And gave me instead one of your own toys

I turned the page and the first thing that showed
Was you and me stringing some popcorn at midnight
Then another photo from the Christmas it snowed
Two years after I was first in your sights

A photo from the year I'd caught up and was eight
But you were eleven and taller and messing my hair
Next to it was one from the year we ate
All your mother's Christmas cookies in our secret lair

One from the Christmas that I turned ten
You were holding my hand and spinning me around
And another one where we had carefully penned
"Merry Christmas—it's the sixth we've spent together sound."

On the next page it was the seventh year
We were laughing so hard we almost cried
And one from the year I wiped away your tear
One of your loved ones had suddenly died

I knew from the next one we were on our way
We were baking cookies for Santa to find
A photo from our tenth Boxing Day
Where I surprised you with a hug from behind

The next shot showed us in my old tree house
Laughing as we wrapped each other's presents
Then there was another where we fed the mouse
And one the year the Queen came and visited us peasants

In the next one I was nineteen and you twenty two
You'd graduated from college and I from high school
And one where we rode the sled without thinking it through
And one where we played the Lady and Fool

The next one was my first Christmas at college
Didn't expect to see you there but you showed at my door
And there you stood, finally out of your cage
With that same smile you showed me when I was four

Another photo from the Christmas we first kissed
You had showed up again with a card undertow
And the Christmas when college work was not to be missed
The next one being where I wrote your name in the snow

I flipped the page and there looking up at me
Were our younger selves standing in snow white as doves
Next to it was one where I was twenty six and free
The year I taught you of Christmas, and Jesus, and love

Bigger than the others was the photo of us
The very first Christmas after we were married
In the one just under I was making a fuss
You'd spilled all your tea on the expensive mead

Our twenty fourth Christmas together was the first
Time we bought a tree, or so the photo says
Our twenty fifth was when all the balloons burst
The next the year when I jokingly gave you a fez

When I was thirty one and you thirty four
We had our first Christmas with a little one
The next year she was toddling all over the floor
And the next Christmas one where we had no sun

Then there was Christmas three decades since the start
We sat by the fire singing all the carols we knew
And then we promised we'd never spend Christmas apart
And you smiled that special smile that was always askew

The Christmas after that was the best one yet
But little did I know that for you it'd be the last
Back then that I'd spend more with you I could have bet
But I guess all those Christmases now lie in the past

This year would have been the thirty second
Christmas that I'd spent with you
But it seems that since your life was shortened
I've had to say adieu

And I realize for all that the Christmas season
Has always been about love, I could have told you
More often that you're the reason
My happiness began anew
LONGEST, MOST TASKING POEM I'VE EVER DONE!! But it was worth it (: this is my winter contest entry for [link] 's group contest with a Christmas theme, set in AU, Belgium's POV. There were lots of different types of artwork to choose from, and I couldn't decide, so I came up with a picture and a poem, I really hope you don't mind. The poem is inspired by All Too Well (a song) in the way it put down lots of memories. The picture shows Belgium and their 'little one', which would be inspired by the flashback scene in Brave where Merida and the Queen sing together. I don't expect to win, but I did work hard on this! :)

That was beautiful. I love how each Christmas was such a cherished, vibrant memory, painting the whole poem with a nostalgic and bittersweet feel.
